48 outdoor education students from Melville Senior High School joined us at Guildford Meadows on a very wet Wednesday to kick off our 2025 planting season.
They persevered through the challenging conditions to safely plant 2000 native trees and plants in the muddy ground. Despite the rain, they should be commended for their resilience and good humour.
Our annual schools planting day is part of our SPROUT! Schools program which is focused on empowering the next generation of environmental advocates. Special thanks to the team of six Trillion Trees volunteers who supported Restoration Manager, Doug Laurie, to deliver this event alongside the students. Kirsty, Ylenia, Zhanna, Alan, Emlyn and Rob kept smiling through the showers!
Guildford Meadows (Mandoon Moitch) is one of our flagship restoration sites in the Perth Metro area.
Located on the banks of the Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River) this project
contains a significant remnant wetland, once surrounded by riparian
vegetation and a Eucalyptus rudis (Moitch / Flooded Gum) Woodland.
The area was largely cleared for grazing in the 1930s with only the wetland and a few large trees remaining. Now a part of Whiteman Park, it’s an area of environmental importance that provides viable habitat for threatened and at-risk native animal species, and is home to significant, registered cultural sites of the local Noongar people.
Since the foundation of this partnership in 2016, we've planted over 70,000 native trees and plants in this area. A wide range of endangered local wildlife species frequent the area including Carnaby's Black Cockatoos, possums and bandicoots.
In 2025 we will be planting over 20,000 native trees and plants at the site in collaboration with students, local people and corporate groups.
