Heavy rain conditions last Sunday didn’t stop hundreds of volunteers from coming out to help Trillion Trees with their annual winter planting days.

HUNDREDS of community volunteers gathered in Viveash and Caversham in July to plant native trees and plants to help the ecosystems in Reg Bond Reserve and Guildford Meadows recover.

The events held by volunteer-led environmental organisation Trillion Trees drew large turnouts despite heavy rain at the Viveash site on Sunday, July 27.

Community members helped plant 9000 trees across Caversham and Viveash as part of the organisation’s annual winter community planting days.

Trillion Trees ecological restoration manager Doug Laurie said community planting days played a vital role in restoring degraded land and rebuilding habitats for native wildlife.

“Healing landscapes is all about returning degraded land into bushland with greater ecological value,” he said.

“It’s about restoring biodiversity and improving the health of the landscape.

“On days like this, when the community comes together to restore bushland, it shows our collective power in action – working together to repair what’s been lost and ensure our future landscapes can support a wider range of native species.”

The Viveash planting was supported by a grant from Bupa and Landcare Australia.

Trillion Trees has planted more than 15 million trees since it was established in 1979.

The group continues to host free public planting days each winter, calling on people of all ages and backgrounds to take part.

Last year’s Caversham planting saw more than 6000 native trees, shrubs and groundcover species planted in just a few hours by 90 volunteers as reported in Echo News last year.

The site focused on restoring riparian woodland and improving habitat for species such as quendas, possums and black cockatoos.
