A large group of corporate volunteers from Perth companies joined the Trillion Trees team for the final team planting day of the season at Guildford Meadows (Mandoon Moitch) on Friday 31 July.
Representatives from KUFPEC, Scott Park Group, Scott Print, Perspektiv and CPS planted 3719 native trees and plants in a few hours. Team planting days are a popular way to connect corporate teams by working together in nature, building strong workplace relationships and promoting staff wellbeing while giving back to the community and our environment.
Since 2016 we have planted over 130,000 trees and plants at Mandoon Moitch, restoring this riparian zone which was cleared for grazing almost 100 years ago.
Restoring this important landscape will help create more habitat for native wildlife, including black cockatoos and rakali, while protecting Noongar cultural sites and the waterways connecting the Gnangara Water Mound with the Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River). It’s an area of environmental importance that provides viable habitat for threatened and at-risk native animal species, and is home to significant, registered cultural sites of the local Noongar people.
Guildford Meadows is part of Whiteman Park, and is a popular location for dog walkers. Located on the banks of the Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River) this project contains a significant remnant wetland, once surrounded by riparian vegetation and a Eucalyptus rudis (Moitch / Flooded Gum) Woodland.
The majestic Eucalyptus rudis, which only grows alongside wetland areas, is now sadly classified as a near-threatened vegetation community due to land clearing for agriculture and urban development. Our conservation efforts are focused on helping to protect and restore the remaining areas containing these important ecosystems in urban environments.
