Nature Care at Bowra & O'Dea Memorial Grove

May 12, 2026 in Restoration

An enthusiastic group of 25 volunteers joined the Trillion Trees team at Reg Bond Reserve, Viveash, to participate in nature care activities on Friday 8 May 2026. Students from UWA joined corporate volunteers from B&D and Spencer Ogden to care for the young trees planted at the Bowra and O'Dea Memorial Grove.

In three hours, the volunteers spread 714 square metres of wood mulch which will work to suppress weeds, helping to combat competition and reduce fire risk around the saplings. Litter was also collected and some of the smallest young trees were marked with stakes to protect them from trampling or mowing.

Cleared for agriculture in the 1800s, Reg Bond Reserve sits on one of many degraded floodplains along the Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River). Habitat fragmentation and declining urban canopy alongside this waterway is a significant threat to our local ecology and its resilience to the effects of climate change. Our restoration efforts here play an important role in increasing the health of the river, providing habitat for threatened animal species and combating climate change.

For over 30 years, Bowra and O'Dea have supported Trillion Trees to plant memorial groves at locations across Perth and the Wheatbelt, including Reg Bond Reserve. In 2026 and beyond, their valuable support will help to fund our large Mandoon Moitch project at Guildford Meadows.
