Hazelmere Data Centre Development DAP Date

May 12, 2026 in General

The Metro Outer Development Assessment Panel (MODAP) has set the date for the hearing which will make a determination on Greensquare DC's proposal for a supersize data centre in Hazelmere.

On Tuesday 19 May 2026 (9.30am) a five person panel will consider the development application at the City of Swan Council Chambers in Midland. The MODAP is open to the public and will also be available to view online via a livestream.

Trillion Trees continues to oppose this development, which will be just 200m from our community nursery and Mandoon Bilya Restoration Project.

The City of Swan received 1829 submissions from community members objecting to the Hazelmere data centre proposal. It is understood this number of objections is a record for any community consultation about a development application in the shire.

120 people also attended a community rally opposing the development in Midland in 22 April.

The community's concerns are serious and wide ranging:

  • Noise from 24/7 cooling systems and back up diesel generators
  • Scale of the development in a rural residential setting (220m long x 24m high plus exhaust stacks)

The proposed Hazelmere Data Centre will dwarf the adjacent Helena River Waldorf School and tower over surrounding established trees
  • Contravenes the intent of the zoning (Special Use Zone) and the Hazelmere Enterprise Area Structure Plan (HEASP)
  • Significant impacts on the neighbouring school community as an existing sensitive land user including noise, pollution, traffic, safety, amenity and bushfire risk
  • Risks of permanent environmental damage to the adjacent Helena River and conservation category wetland during construction and operation
  • Classification of a data centre as a "warehouse" in the absence of proper category for this emerging land use
  • Impacts on the amenity of local residents and businesses
  • Urban heat island impacts of a large building, which requires extensive clearance of canopy trees and will expel heat from cooling systems against the backdrop of a warming climate

Helena River Appeal #

In 2026, the Trillion Trees team will be planting 6500 native trees and plants along the Helena River (Mandoon Bilya) with corporate teams and a community planting day.

We’ve been custodians of this precious waterway for almost 40 years, planting trees, shrubs and sedges along its banks to restore water quality and provide habitat for wildlife.

The Helena River corridor is a crucial connection for wildlife seeking safe passage through our busy suburbs, from black cockatoos following safe flying routes to the snake necked turtles who swim in the waters and nest close to the riverbank.

Please donate to fund native trees, plants and restoration projects along the Mandoon Bilya.

  • $90 helps us grow 30 native sedges, providing habitat for aquatic wildlife
  • $150 helps us build quenda hotels, providing shelter for native bandicoots
  • $400 helps us run nature care days, installing swales to slow the water flow and protect the riverbanks from erosion
