Planting Season Begins in Wagin

May 29, 2026 in Restoration

We are kicking off our 2026 planting season in Wagin with our largest event of the year - 40,000 native plants, 200+ people and a whole weekend of festival fun.

Working in partnership with our old friends from Activate Tree Planting, we're delivering a three day festival of tree planting, good food and great music.

Activate Tree Planting is a child of Trillion Trees, a fantastic volunteer-led group formed under our auspices in 2000 before flying the nest. The exceptional duo of Thom and Rosanne Scott, are elders of both Trillion Trees and Activate Tree Planting. The Activate Tree Planting crew combine music, art, food, indigenous culture and community together into unique events that repair and revegetate our landscape.

The 2026 Trillion Trees and Activate Tree Planting Festival will take place at a private property in Wagin.

Situated in close proximity to a large system of salt lakes, this property has become highly salt-affected with remnant stands of Eucalyptus loxophleba (York Gum), Allocasuarina fraseriana (Sheoak) and Hakea sp. steadily being lost to samphire and weeds. The history of the site is largely unknown by the current landowners, Paul and Fran, though it was likely cleared for cropping at some stage. Losses of remnant vegetation across the site have been accelerated by increases in soil salinity.

Re-creating mosaics of Eucalyptus sp., Melaleuca sp., Allocasuarina sp. and samphire, this restoration project addresses habitat fragmentation, biodiversity loss and salinisation in the Salt Lake ecosystems and adjoining woodlands that form part of the Blackwood River Catchment.

Pioneer Planting

In 2025, a small trial site was planted with pioneer species. Coojong (Golden wreath wattle) Acacia saligna is a fast growing pioneer plant with clusters of bee-attracting yellow flowers, ideal for windbreaks. Mangart (Raspberry jam wattle) Acacia acuminata is a slow growing nitrogen fixing plant well suited to shallow and eroding soils.

In 2026 the species list incorporates a biodiverse range of native trees and plants including Casuarina obesa, Juncus pallidus and Enchylaena tomentosa.
