This week we celebrated a huge milestone in the story of our purpose-driven organisation as we moved into our new community nursery hub, "The Canopy".
Principally supported by Lotterywest, The Canopy will help us to increase our capacity for growing native trees and plants to meet burgeoning demand.
The Trillion Trees team is preparing to unveil the $1million redevelopment at our annual Open Day on Saturday 19 September 2026.
“The Canopy will help to increase capacity for growing native trees and plants to meet burgeoning demand. An extensive new propagation area, nursery offices and cool room for seed storage will offer state of the art facilities for the 120 weekly volunteers that power this purpose-driven organisation.
“The opening of The Canopy marks a major milestone in the story of our purpose-driven organisation, and will provide modern, inviting facilities for our volunteers to continue their brilliant work. This drives us towards our goal of growing more than two hundred thousand native trees and plants next year, while helping us to expand our ecological restoration program in Perth and the Wheatbelt,” said Trillion Trees CEO, Mark Hullett.
The new facilities will be officially unveiled on Saturday 19 September as part of the annual Trillion Trees Open Day. As well as tours and demonstrations in the new community nursery hub, a wide range of native plants will be available for sale, and community members can also enjoy free children’s activities, market stalls, barbecue and coffee van.
“The Open Day is a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate this achievement with our community. This project was made possible by the generous support of Lotterywest who provided grant funding of $860,000, and the extraordinary efforts of our small staff team and hundreds of dedicated volunteers. They are so invested in their new space already, helping to lay flooring, pitching in with landscaping and painting the interior to create a space we can be so proud to call home,” added Mark.
Demand for native trees and plants continues to grow - the Trillion Trees order book was fully subscribed this year. In 2026 the organisation used over 60,000 of the plants grown in the community nursery in their own restoration projects across Perth and the Wheatbelt. The remainder were supplied to local governments, landcare groups, landscapers and more for urban greening, restoration and plants to resident’s programs. Perth has the lowest canopy of any Australian capital city, and the WA Government has a target to increase canopy cover to 30% by 2040, so there is great confidence that demand for native plants and Trillion Trees’ restoration programs will continue to increase.
