Mandoon Bilya Community Planting Day - Saturday 27 June 2026

June 29, 2026 in Restoration

A committed crowd of trusty tree lovers turned out when the skies looked dark and brought sunshine and smiles all morning!

More than 70 special people helped us to plant over 3000 native plants, sedges and ground covers along the banks of the Helena River (Mandoon Bilya) on Saturday 27 June.

This Mandoon Bilya restoration project is helping to restore habitat for wildlife especially quenda and snake necked turtles who need protection from predators to safely move through the river corridor.

Patsy from Nannas for Native Forests made a special effort to join us to plant here, just a few metres from the site of the proposed Hazelmere Data Centre. Her handmade banner was centre stage in the rally against the data centre, and it was poignant to spend time on country with her as we remembered what we fought so hard to protect.

Its so rewarding to contribute to nature-based solutions that improve biodiversity and ecological health within our urban environment. Tree planting is a great way to take direct action against climate change and help restore the beautiful riparian zone of the Mandoon Bilya.

Home to Western Long Neck Turtles, Rakali, Brush Tailed Possums, and a large variety of bird species, this project is rebuilding local plant communities along the lower floodplain to provide viable habitat to the many remnant fauna species in the area.

Tree planting is great exercise, and a wonderful boost for wellbeing. Thanks also to Forrest Darlings CWA Branch for the homemade morning tea treats.

This event was plastic free thanks to a Plastic Free Riverparks Grant
